Nitrex systems are fully automated and feature electrically heated, gas nitriding furnaces.
The purpose of nitriding is to increase the surface hardness of steel parts and enhance their wear, fatigue, and corrosion properties. This is done by imparting individual nitrogen atoms (N) to the surface of the steel. The source of nitrogen is derived by heating ammonia (NH3) until the nitrogen and hydrogen in the ammonia molecule dissociate (NH3 becomes N and H3). Hydrogen is a by-product of this process. The ability to control the nitride layer thickness (white layer or compound layer) and its properties is a function of temperature, time, and ammonia flow during the process.
The Nitrex system regulates the gas flow by measuring the nitriding potential (Kn). Kn is a measurement of the atmosphere’s potential to allow for diffusion of nitrogen into the steel’s surface.
The duration of a typical process is 12 hours and consists of 2 hours for heating and purging the furnace of air, 8 hours for nitriding, and lastly 2 hours for cooling and purging the furnace so that it’s safe to open. However, the steel type of the part to nitride, furnace size, desired properties, and other factors will result in different process times ranging from 6 hours to longer than 36 hours.

- Furnace – The chamber where the nitriding takes place
- Control Panel – Contains all electrical components for controlling the furnace
- Gas Panel – Contains all the components for controlling gas flow into the furnace
- Neutralizer – Used to neutralize the effluent exhaust gasses from the nitriding process
